Music Mind and Body

X-SYSTEM

Emeritus Professor of Music Nigel Osborne, composer, inventor and aid worker, along with linguist and musician is one of the world’s great animateurs in the use of music to help children with trauma from war and conflict, and those with disabilities.

x-system, which Nigel co-invented with Professor Paul Robinson, some 13 years ago, is a new technology which accurately categorises music by its physical effect on the brain. It collects data from the stimulation of the emotions of the heart, mind and body by music.

Opera Circus introduced Nigel to Dorset Music Hub with whom Nigel delivered a series of online webinars and training for teachers with detailed information about the value of x-system and how it can be used in classrooms to help children tackle their anxiety and stress during this period, and in the long term.
Opera Circus has had long term relationship with primary schools in Bridport, Dorset and a small pilot programme began with one school on how to use Nigel’s teaching. The music lead, David Byrne has developed the process with great success in the school and we made a short film with him to pass on his and the children’s discoveries.

In January 2022 thanks to support of the members of The Funding Network, we started an experimental process working with the opera singers Darren Abrahams and Lore Lixenberg, Nigel, the composer Peter Nelson, the Senior Technician from x-system John Turner and two brilliant sound artists Leo Butt and Gavin McCabe.

TEACHERS AND MUSICIANS - TRAINING

We are now developing an online training course through an Action Research process in Bridport and its environs, Dorset. This is in collaboration with Darren Abraham of The Human Hive who has been an artist and wellbeing powerhouse with Opera Circus for decades. More news on this shortly.

Nigel and x-system are now part of another extraordinary project called Random Music, led by Share Music Sweden https://www.sharemusic.se/en/home and working with Jacktrip Foundation https://www.jacktrip.org
